"E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy" Game Review

Binary purgatory (laudatory).

eye-divine-cybermancy

An absolutely strange and confounding experience from beginning to end, but one I cannot help but find endearing. Nearly everything here regarding gameplay and plot is broken, nonsensical, or opaque to the point of incoherence. But the sandboxes that comprise its levels invite you to explore them and achieve your objectives in a myriad of ways, more Deus Ex than a traditional FPS.

Where E.Y.E truly succeeds is crafting an intangible aura with an earnestness many games today have to force to achieve. The unrestrained artificiality of the experience gives this a very particular atmosphere. Vast mazes that go nowhere. NPCs whose very existence is waiting in shadowed corners just to give you their cryptic dialogue and never speak to you again. Detailed Lo-fi environments playing out their cycles in lonely perpetuity, all set to haunting ambience. Every element here makes you feel alone in a space much bigger than yourself, and the ghost in the machine is alive.

People looking for a tight FPS or strong and well-defined RPG mechanics should look elsewhere. Those who have an appreciation for weirdo obscura should absolutely try this.

3.5/5
